Wisdom from the Couch

Knowing and Growing Yourself from the Inside Out

My book, Wisdom from the Couch (2014), is a guide to understanding the mysteries of the mind and how we can change for the better.

I wrote it to share the wisdom of psychoanalysis with a broader audience, especially people who might not otherwise encounter the kind of deep psychological work I do in my private practice. The book also speaks to students, mental health professionals, and anyone interested in personal growth and transformation.

At the heart of the book are some questions that most of us can recognize: Why do perfectly intelligent people do such obviously counterproductive things? Why do we do the things we know we shouldn’t do, and fail to do the things we know we should?

The answer lies largely in the unconscious mind, which influences so much of how we think, feel, and behave. As we come to understand ourselves at a deeper level, we gain greater freedom to make meaningful changes in our lives—changes that have the potential to last.

A Headshrinker’s Guide to the Galaxy

From 2014 to 2021, I wrote a blog for Psychology Today called A Headshrinker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

My aim was to demystify psychoanalysis and make its insights accessible to anyone interested in understanding themselves and living a more satisfying, meaningful life. Some essays explore psychoanalysis itself, while others apply its wisdom to the challenges of everyday life—love, loss, hope, work, patience, and the many ways we struggle and grow.

Psychology Today continues to maintain an archive of these essays for readers to explore.

And as you read through these essays, take a cue from my signature image: relax, kick off your shoes, lean back, and see where your mind takes you.

Life Essentials Workshops

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

— Mary Oliver

Drawing on the wisdom of depth psychology, my Life Essentials workshops offer an opportunity to explore this question together. Designed for those navigating life transitions or simply seeking a deeper, more meaningful life, these workshops invite thoughtful reflection on the challenges and possibilities of being human.

Together, we explore three essential practices:

Embracing reality

Engaging wholeheartedly with life as it is, rather than as we wish it to be.

Choosing change

Intentionally pursuing personal growth, both in everyday life and through difficult experiences.

Surrendering control

Learning to let go, embrace healthy vulnerability, and cultivate relationships that sustain us.

Bring Life Essentials to Your Organization

I welcome invitations to lead Life Essentials workshops for organizations and groups. Programs can take the form of half-day or full-day workshops, overnight retreats, or online gatherings, with space for reflection and thoughtful conversation.
